What is Temporal Arthritis?

Temporal arthritis is also known as giant cell arthritis. This is because of the way this particular type of arthritis works. It is an illness that is systemic inflammatory and it only affects individuals who are 50 and above, at least in the vast majority of cases.

This type of arthritis comes on quite slowly and as a result many people believe they are coming down with a cold or the flu. That is because the systems occur with malaise and exhaustion over the period of a couple weeks. Individuals are likely to experience weight loss and even a low grade fever. Joint swelling is not classic with this particular type of arthritis, but aches and pains in the shoulders and hips are. Since this is an inflammatory arthritis the large arteries of the body also become inflamed. In this particular type of arthritis the temporal artery is inflamed and it causes headache, jaw soreness, and even tenderness in the scalp. This is because the temporal artery is located close to the temples of one’s head. Shockingly, blindness is a result of temporal arthritis in some individuals because the optic nerve is supplied with blood from the temporal artery.

Luckily, individuals who suffer from temporal arthritis have some treatment options. The most popular treatment for this type of arthritis is prednisone and it works very well. The biggest concern people with temporal arthritis have is not that they have to deal with the pain but that they could eventually lose their vision. If this arthritis is not treated there are other areas of the body as well that could be affected. Fortunately, vision loss is easily prevented if individuals simply seek health care as soon as they have the symptoms discussed above. Nobody is sure exactly what causes temporal arthritis but it is believed to be an immune response, at least until evidence exists to prove another theory. This illness is associated with chronic disorders like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. It is also related to large doses of antibiotics and very bad infections.

Usually blood tests are not very specific and most doctors are able to feel the inflamed artery in the temporal area. Treatment is important to increase blood flow and reduce any type of irreversible damage to the individual.
